In a Reuters article, our project coordinator Dan Mercea, Professor of Digital and Social Change at St George’s, University of London, explains how the recent flotilla—which both benefited from and contributed to a broader political shift, such as France and the UK recognising Palestinian statehood in response to Israel’s offensive—illustrates how political participation continues to evolve in times of crisis.
This aligns closely with the goals of the INTERFACED project, which explores how people have engaged in politics since the COVID-19 pandemic—a period marked by declining trust in democracy and science, as well as growing social divisions and inequalities. Studying such events helps us understand the dynamics of grassroots mobilisation, transnational solidarity, and the ways citizens navigate complex political landscapes today.
